Six years before “Rigoletto”, Giuseppe Verdi set to music a gripping drama about love and revenge – and thus achieved his final breakthrough as a composer: “Ernani”. This opera, too, is based on a play by the French author Victor Hugo. It all revolves around the love for a woman: Elvira. The director Lotte de Beer, who is known for her imagination in dealing with historical material, dedicates herself to the fictional plot with references to the 16th century.
