The protagonist in Henrik Ibsen’s original drama of the same name, on which Edward Clug’s ballet is based, is a selfish anti-hero beset by dilemmas. The other characters’ reactions to his behavior when he’s simply trying to be true to himself only serve to confuse him further. Ultimately, he is a lost soul unable to understand the world around him.
