Intoxicating melodies (“Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiß”, “Freunde, das Leben ist lebenswert”) and borrowings from Puccini stand alongside operetta-like innocence. However, the end of the story is by no means cheerful: The lovers Giuditta and Octavio go their separate ways, while Captain Octavio remains lonely as a failed man. Adding orchestral music and songs by contemporaries, Christoph Marthaler radically places Lehár’s operetta in the context of the the turmoil and confusion of its time.
