With Verdi’s last opera, the composer and his librettist Arrigo Boito tried their hand at the light-hearted genre, a style that Verdi had not touched for around 50 years. The congenial team of artists succeeded in creating a new form of musical comedy: a work free of conventions, subtle in its structure, far from clumsy laughter theatre. The opera ends with an epochal gigantic fugue, in which the conclusion of the work “everything is foolishness on earth” is musically declined.
