“Ariadne On Naxos” by Richard Strauss is one of the most idiosyncratic operas of the early 20th century. The plot goes back to the famous myth of Ariadne, who is abandoned by Theseus on the island of Naxos. The modern prologue in which a young composer is tormented by selfish artists who complicate the preparations for the opera’s production in an eternal struggle between comedy and high art, is an almost post-modern self-reference.
