Gounod’s opera sets its own priorities: The old Faust is less tormented by the question of “what holds the world together at its core” than by the longing for love and youth. In his production, Frank Castorf unfolds a multi-layered story: Paris at the time of the premiere meets Paris around 1960, in which conflicts culminated that had their origins in Gounod’s highly capitalist and colonialist era and at the same time led to the crises of our European present.
