When Florestan tried to expose Don Pizarro’s brutal acts of tyranny, Pizarro had him imprisoned in a state jail, where he endures inhumane conditions. To free him, his wife Leonore disguises herself as Fidelio. She prevents her husband’s murder, and a visiting minister restores Florestan and the other prisoners to freedom.
