In Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly”, the tragic story of the young geisha Cio-Cio-San unfolds, who marries American naval officer Pinkerton, believing it to be a lasting union, while he views it as a fleeting adventure. Upon his return with a new wife, she is forced to face the shattering of her dream. In Anthony Minghella’s production, restaged by Carolyn Choa, stylized Japanese elements are used, enhanced by minimalist sets, stunning lighting, and puppet effects.
