The Spanish heir to the throne, Don Carlo, was set to marry the French princess Elisabeth. However, King Philip II unexpectedly declares his intention to marry Elisabeth himself, leading her to comply with the king’s will. Don Carlo and the liberal Marquis Posa find themselves in conflict with the Grand Inquisitor due to their political ambitions. Director Kirill Serebrennikov brings “Don Carlo” into a contemporary context; drawing inspiration for the stage design and costumes from the Kyoto Costume Institute.
