Intrigues, mix-ups, and amorous adventures set in 19th-century Vienna: The wealthy Gabriel von Eisenstein is sentenced to prison but escapes his fate and attends a party. There, he encounters his wife, Rosalinde, who has disguised herself as a mysterious stranger. Disguises and unexpected twists keep the guests on their toes as they become immersed in music and intrigue. Director Otto Schenk viewed “Die Fledermaus” as a blend of sentimentality and a devilish craving for entertainment that leads to humiliations.
