The boy Max argues with his mother, but instead of obeying the imposed house arrest, he embarks on a journey to a distant island… To craft an opera libretto from this, Maurice Sendak let his imagination spark, inventing, for instance, a unique language for the wild creatures awaiting Max on the island. Oliver Knussen was inspired by this for what would become his most adventurous score: it whistles, squeaks, sparkles, glows, seduces and dances lightly, a sheer joy. Knussen was guided by the music that had influenced him as a youth. A fireworks display of ideas – the perfect sope for director and puppetry virtuoso Nikolaus Habjan.
