In April 2024, MusikTheater An Der Wien celebrates the world premiere of “Cublai, Gran Kan De’ Tartari” by Giambattista Casti with music by Antonio Salieri from 1786. A premiere with more than 200 years of delay? That’s only possible in opera! The series of performances scheduled for 1787 was canceled by Emperor Joseph II at the beginning of the so-called Turkish Wars. Because the opera is a biting satire on the Russian Tsar’s court. However, Austria was going to war against the Ottomans with the Russians. A bad time to offend the allies. But is Salieri’s opera in a better position today?
