The Austrian composer Johanna Doderer, who composed the work commissioned by the Vienna State Opera in 2015, chose a story by the Syrian-German writer Rafik Schami as her inspiration: Fatima, a courageous and clever girl from humble beginnings, takes on the difficult task of defeating the evil lord of the castle in a wager, thus freeing all the children’s dreams held captive by him. In the end, she even manages to bring home the golden stardust and put an end to her familys bitter hardship.
