Rameau: Hippolyte et Aricie

Composer: Jean-Philippe Rameau. Conductor: Sir Simon Rattle

© Karl Forster

For the first time, the Berlin State Opera has tackled one of the French baroque tragédies lyriques by Jean-Philippe Rameau, with Sir Simon Rattle making his debut at the helm of the Freiburger Barockorchester, with Anna Prohaska on top of a fantastic cast and an entire cosmos of nature-turned-art by Ólafur Elíasson, who translated the score's  infinite variety of musical forms and expressive inventions into light, sets and costume design. "Hippolyte et Aricie" transports its audience to a magical realm where two couples experience the intervention of the gods, deep earnestness is paired with fleet-footed entertainment – and love seeks its way according to its own laws.
