Descent into the Maelstrom
Norwegian film director Jan Vardoen came across this more or less neglected piece of music by Philip Glass composed in the 1980s for the Australian Ballet. “Descent into the Maelstrom” is based on a short story by Edgar Allan Poe describing the fate of two fishermen, whose boat is dragged into the raging waters between the mountainous islands of Lofoten, inside the Arctic Circle of Northern Norway. In the film, the 60-strong Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra and choir performed the piece in its birthplace, on the top of a mountain overlooking the “Moskenesstraumen”.
