Countess Mariza, who is both rich and beautiful, can scarcely ward off her admirers and fortune hunters. She concocts a story about a fiancé, but unfortunately, a baron with that name actually exists, and, to Mariza’s horror he is not averse to marrying her. All of this just as she meets Tassilo, the new bailiff on her estate, who – regardless of her class – pleases her much better than any admirer before.
