Halka is a tragic opera that was premiered in Teatr Wielki in Warsaw in 1858 – with a libretto by Włodzimierz Wolski and music by Stanisław Moniuszko. The opera tells the story of the poor peasant girl Halka and the rich nobleman Janusz, whom she loves and from whom she expects a child. However, he is already promised to the castle owner’s daughter. When Halka sees her lover Janusz again, but her requests and supplications are not answered by him, the tragic story begins.
